I have been involved with acting, writing and storytelling since I was a teenager. There is a good reason why the art of storytelling interests me.

There are many ways of communicating information to people. You can describe something in a matter-of-fact way, express an emotion through dance or singing, draw, point or tell a story.

All these ways of expressing something are just different ways of conveying information. But the way you decide to convey this information dictates how it’s perceived by people.

If you want to compel people to act on something, the way you tell them this information is as important as the information itself. Information in itself doesn’t compel people to act. However, emotion does.

People are emotionally driven creatures, and whether we like it or not, emotions make us act. Storytelling is an art form that conveys information in a way that stirs people emotionally.

If it was machines that made all the decisions in the world, we could have simply just inputted the information in a matter-of-fact way to make them act the way we wanted them to. But since all major decisions come from people that are influenced by their emotions - whether they’re aware of it or not - we have a much better chance of making them act by appealing to their emotions.

Storytelling communicates the way we are wired to communicate - emotionally.

For this reason, a story well told can have a more profound impact on society than information conveyed in any other way. The potential that stories have to change the world is huge.

Stories can also be a very effective source of light entertainment. Although I love light-hearted entertainment, I wouldn’t spend such a big portion of my life pursuing storytelling if it didn’t have the potential to make people act.

To me, few things in the world are more powerful than mastering the art of storytelling. The way I tell stories is through film.
